This is the first course in a two-course sequence of "Computer Science Fundamentals" that prepares students without a background in CS to enter the graduate program in Applied Computer Science.

CS5201. Computer Science Fundamentals I

How the Course Works

Each student taking this course will work independently with the guidance of a CS faculty. The course will consist primarily of weekly programming assignments and quizzes. This is a very intensive course. Students should expect to spend a minimum of 15 hours per week on the course.

Which section do I register for?

The Department offers two options for completing the CS fundamentals sequence. Students may choose to take both CS 5201 and CS 5202 in one semester, or take each course for one complete semester. You should discuss both options with the Department prior to registration to determine which will be most appropriate. If you choose to complete both courses in one semester, you will complete CS 5201 during the first half of the semester, and CS 5202 during the second half. If you prefer to have more time to complete each course, then you would register for CS 5201 only, which would allow you the full semester to complete CS 5201.

• If you want to complete both CS 5201 and CS 5202 in one semester, you should register for both CS 5201 section 1 and CS 5202 section 1.
• If you prefer to have the entire semester to complete CS 5201, then you should register for CS 5201 section 2 only.

Please note that this is NOT an online/distance-learning course. While most of the work can be completed on the student's own time (there is no scheduled lecture), students should expect to meet with their assigned faculty and TA regularly throughout the semester to discuss their progress and obtain assistance, as needed.
