General Education CS Courses

The Department offers service courses in computing, as part of the UWG Core Curriculum, for students majoring in any discipline to gain an introductory understanding of technology, computers, software applications, and societal implications of computing.

Course Descriptions

CS 1000 - Practical Computing

A hands-on introduction to the use of personal computers and software, input/output devices, graphical user interfaces, teminology, and software. (Fulfills Core Area B2.)

Pre-requisites: None
Credits: 1

Course Outcomes

  • Create formatted documents using a word processor
  • Create electronic presentations using presentation software
  • Perform basic data analysis using a spreadsheet program
  • Create web pages

CS 1020 - Computers and Society

A hands-on instruction to the use of personal computers and software, with an introductory examination of the effects of computer technology on contemporary society. Topics will include productivity applications, creation of web pages, social and ethical issues in computing; privacy, security, censorship, and the changes in work, school, and entertainment fostered by computing. (Fulfills Core Area B2.)

Credits: 2

  • Identify and explain important ethical and social issues in the use of computer and information technology

CS 1030 - Introduction to Computer Concepts

An introduction to the concepts, usage, and uses of computers. Topics include the social and ethical aspects of computing; the Internet, including the creation of Web pages; digital logic and the binary number system; and overview of computer architecture, operating systems, and applications; an introduction to algorithms and programming using Visual BASIC. (Fulfills Core area D2 for non-science majors.)
